Terribly smart vintage 1940s wool day dress is the sporty look of the era I just love. The soft wool plaid is taupe, pale caramel and brown. The construction has clever details, and I've found similar features in patterns in my 1939 Vogue pattern book. The yoke is defined. A center placket is a double breasted closure. This is cut to overlap the waist - the last two buttons are on the waist itself. The piece work is finished in a brown top stitch. This is homemade, and beautifully so. At the back the bodice is gathered for a perfectly bloused shape above the inset waistband. The skirt is an aline, gathered at front for a bit of drape. The silhouette is one you see in sportswear ads and candid vintage shots, an eminently wearable style, executed in the softest wool. If could own a dozen like this, I would!

This dress is clean and ready to wear. I have spot treateda group of three small subtle stains in the skirt - and three between the second and third button. All are improved, but not 100% gone. The buttons have aged a little. I find no other issues to note. This smart dress is worthy of your Nancy Drew escapades.
