Rare 1930s Black Erlebacher Evening Gown with Sleek Lines and Long Sleeves
Vintage late 1930s evening gown in a rich black rayon crepe. The silhouette is utterly sophisticated, a sleek and seductive femme fatale gown that shows nothing and suggests everything. The shoulders are strong, although the pads are replacments and the long sleeves come to fitted cuffs that close with self-fabric buttons. The dress is wicked, a sleek piece with asymmetrically detailed bodice, darts at the left hip, and grecian folds down the left side, suspended on a placket of self-fabric on the interior. The full length skirt has two pleats at each side, and the center back of the skirt is decadently draped. This fabulous piece closes with a side metal zipper on the right and buttons at the back of the neck. Sold at the high end D.C. shop Erlebacher, the style and sophistication of this piece are evident, and the quality matches - it's a heavy rayon with exceptional drape. And more than likley, it was a custom ordered piece, as the zipper closes on the right - a detail that a left-handed woman might request. Who knows what famous shoulder this dress danced with?
Bust: 38"-snug 39"
Label: Erlebacher, Washington D.C.
Material: Rayon Crepe
Condition: Very Good minus
This gown is clean and ready to wear. I have had to replace the original button loops, which were breaking, with modern black wedding button loops. The shoulderpads are replacement, likely from the 80s, but they serve reasonably well. Someone removed the belt loops in the past as well. I find no other issues to note!
