Vintage Victorian Mantelet - c. 1889-91 Victorian Beaded Silk Mantelet with Lappets and Fluttering Velvet Trim

  • Product Description

Vintage Victorian mantle is a kind of gothically delicious drama that I seldom get to see, particularly in a larger size - pieces like this often have not survived changes in ownership and years of storage. This mantelet is made of a silk faille and lined in satin. The sleeves are clever, structured to fit the natural bend of the arm. An interior waistband keeps it secure in place. There is soutache filled with jet beading, and the trim is a velvet fringe, made to mimic the look of small animal tales - quite the fad for a decade or so. It will pair perfectly with any Victorian skirt or gown and could be worn daringly with other eras and separates.

      Bust: best to about 41"
      Interior Waistband: 34"
      Front Length: 41"
      Rear Length: 26.5

      Label: None Present
      Material: Silk
      Condition: Good minus, as is

This bodice is clean and ready to wear, with flaws. There are breaks to the silk and old repairs at the top edge of each sleeve just off the shoulder. There is some bead shedding, although I'm not able to pin point a specific place. I think a few individual bits of fringe have gone missing. The soutache has faded to brown with time. Still, it is structurally quite wearable and really a hard to find treasure in this size!
