Vintage 1950s Dress - Rare 50s Striped Suit by Designer Claire McCardell Gorgeous Subtle Stripes
Vintage 1950s dress by one of the queens of California style, Claire McCardell. McCardell's designs are timelessly stylish and wearable, made of excellent materials and beautifully crafted. This suit is attributed to her, confirmed by the private collector who consigned it, using a duplicate suit in a different colorway from her collection - see the last photo. This suit is uniquely McCardell, a sporty look that clearly intends for the pieces to be able to be worn separately as well as paired. Perhaps the most obvious cue is the working hips pockets on the flared skirt. The woven stripes are mitered, and perfectly matched, a challenge for such fine rows. The colors are rose pink, spring green, bright blue, yellow, brown and perwinkle. The overall rainbow is soft and subtle. The jacket features the rounder - but still lightly padded - shoulders of the early 50s in subtle dolman sleeves with deep cuffs. The collar is a narrow shawl style with a point at the back of the neck. The jacket is fully lined in peach rayon.
Label: California Shop, New Bedford.
PER attached photo, this is a Claire McCardell by Townley, made of Miron wool - that photo is, as marked,is from an identical suit in a different colorway, currently held in a private collection.
Condition: Good plus
This set is freshly dry cleaned and pressed and wears beautifully. The skirt has one tiny moth chew, patched with self-fabric. There is one small spot on the front, and one at back. The hem has been let out to its maximum length. I find no flaws on the jacket. It is clean and lovely. I find no other issues to note.
