Vintage 1940s Dress - Wonderful Restored & Dyed 40s Linen Day Dress in Butter Yellow with Colorblock Anthurium Hip Accents
This charming linen day dress is bright and unique, made of a drapey linen that is perfect for summer. The body of the dress is solid sunshine yellow in a flattering early 40s cut. Pleats from the shoulders run to the waistline, enhancing the shoulders and slimming the appearance of the waist. The neckline is a modified sweetheart, and the sleeves are short. The skirt has only the tiniest bit of flare. At each hip, large circles of self-fabric are layered to create the impression of Anthurium flowers, and crocheted stamen finish the statement. The top of each circle is tacked above the waist to make loops for the two tone belt. The dress closes with a sturdy metal side zipper.
This summery 1940's day dress is remade of its original components, a clever additive restoration of my own. This darling was a solid white ivory linen that was very tanned and stained from storage, despite being sturdy and strong. When I could not fully remove the stains, I decided on a yellow dye that covers most of them. Since the circular accents had some darker discoloration, though, I took them darker, and that's when I decided to make those two tone, for Anthurium flowers, and had someone hand crochet the stamen, so it stayed 100% period correct. Originally, the circled were awkwardly and unevenly sewn on the back, and they really didn't work there in the first place, so I moved them to a front pocket location. The belt I cut where it had a fray, which was not precisely half way, and dyed in the red and green as well. I only do additive restoration when something can't be fully restored otherwise, and this is maybe the biggest change I've ever done. I'm really in love with how it turned out, though. It's something of a FabGabs original, while still a vintage dress.

This dress is clean and ready to wear. As stated, I have dyed it. There is a *slight* darkness at the right underarm. There are seven TEENY, tiny pin-print orangish spots on the bodice, not notable from any distance. There is one other on the back a little below the waist. There is a reinforced fray hole on the back right skirt dart, fully backed with self-fabric, zoom on last photo . This dress wears beautifully and is a true rarity.
