Romantic 1950s Floating Chiffon Cocktail Dress with Sheer Bodice and Sleeves

  • Product Description

Vintage 1940s cocktail dress is alluring and elegant in sheer black mesh over a rayon of exceptional quality. It is a dress that feels almost couture. The bodice offers a v neckline, draped split sleeves, and elegant butterfly embellishments. The butterflies are gorgeous quality, with tiny prong set stones surrounded by bullion thread. The quality of the dress feels, in general, more 30s than 50s, but the lining of the skirt is straight beneath those soft folds of mesh.  The movement of this dress is spectacular. It closes on the side with a metal zipper. One of my favorites from our Winter "Heist" collection. Self-fabric ties make a bow at the back.

This surprising quality of this dress was explained when I found the tag hidden in the turned up hem of the lining. This "Spectator Sports by Bruno" was made under Hattie Carnegie's supervision- this was her "low end" ready to wear line, designed by Mr. Bruno. At least one of example of his work for her sits in the met.

This dress is clean and ready to wear. The neckline has some weak points and repairs with black thread delicately on the edge, and one hole remaining at the right of the neckline. There is a repair and nearby strain at the back right underarm. The mesh has some straining along the back darts. The hem has been taken up from the original length - probably from a longer post-war length during the 1950s -  and while the lining still has it's selvage the exterior tiers of the skirt do not.
