RARE 1950s Edith Head "The Birds and the Bees" Blouse by Bates Cotton Novelty Print
This coveted and versatile “Hug-me-tight” blouse is an Edith Head design, created to promote the 1956 movie “The Birds and the Bees” (which which she was the costumer designer. ) Produced by Bates, known for their novelty fabrics, the crisp cotton is printed with birds of olive green and bees in a coral pink. The wrap style enables it to accommodate a range of sizes, and though we've only shown it tied a couple ways, it's really even more adaptable. Original ads touted that there were "six ways to wear" which mostly seem to do with how it is tied, or if the collar is folded open or worn closed.
This is marked a medium. It seems best for a modern small, but you have some flexibility - a extra small to smaller medium will be able to wear it comfortably.
Ties: Each 46" long
Label: Blouse in Bates Disciplined Mist-Lawn All-Combed Cotton
Condition: Very Good
This top is clean and ready to wear. There is a some fraying to the edges of the label, but this is the only thing I can find to note. It has been worn and washed, so it soft but still sturdy, saturated and bright.
