Vintage 1940s winter day dress is one of the absolute best and rarest I've ever had. This piece is absolute catalog perfection - the sort of thing you see in fashion ads c. 1939 and 1940 so seldom in person. Made of a sage green wool, it features padded shoulders, full cut sleeves with fitted cuffs, and a bodice that closes with self-fabric buttons. The skirt is a gentle, four-gore a-line. It's twice as perfect for cold weather when you put the removable, reversible hood up! Yes, you can wear the hood wit the red velvet side out as well - I can't believe I didn't think to show it! It's hard to believe that this coat has managed to stay intact with the hood, since it is easily detached with two buttons. This beauty closes with a side metal zipper and the bodice buttons.
Accessories shown in modeled shots are for inspiration only, and are not included.
This currently *just* fits the size 6 dress form. It has been altered in the past, and was originally a 23.5 to snug 24" waist.
Label: None Present
Material: Wool, rayon, acetate
Condition: Good, as is, with repairs
This dress is clean and ready to wear. This description will make it sound much worse than it is - I bought it thinking it would be a very good, minus, because the flaws really are hidden, for the most part.
The previous owner had handwashed it to sell it on to me (shudder!) but I have pressed it out and it is fresh and soft. The most notable flaw is that I have mended scattered moth holes and thin spots in a very closely matching thread. I realized when photographing it that I had missed a few, and those will be repaired before it reaches you, but if I've missed any, I promise they are tiny and minor. It's about 35 to 40 points in total, but they really do not stand out. There's about ten in the bodice, tenish total in the sleeves with one on the hood, and perhaps twenty in the skirt. I didn't find the majority without holding the dress to the light. Someone previously took a large segment of the hem to repair two larger holes along the inside edge of hem, and to let out the waist 1.5". I have priced the dress at more than $150 less than it would be in better condition, but this wears absolutely beautifully, and the imperfections do not stand out.
