  • Product Description

A very wearable suit from the mid-late 1910s, this silk ensemble was originally a large, and was altered, probably in the last thirty years, to an extra large size. This is a classic 1916/7 style, with a belt accent at the pleated sides of the jacket and a longer skirt. The collar is wide and notched, and the sleeves are gathered to a wide cuff. The skirt is generously full with pleats.  The jacket has a wide cotton lining, while the skirt is unlined, but has a partial grosgrain interior waistband.

As noted the skirt has been altered, in this case, by cutting the grosgrain waistband, letting out the gathers, and then sewing a rough cotton to joint the internet waistband segments. There's some fraying to the silk t the top of the waist from this, and the work isn't particularly well done. Held to the light, I found six little moth chews in the skirt, and a thin spot from a vertical scratch to the fabric. On the jacket, the buttons that close are rubbed and the silk is breaking away. There is one small hole at the top of the left shoulder, and a tiny break at the sleeve, on the right, there are four on the sleeve and two breaks, and two on the shoulder along with some tracking -I think this is from moths, not fatigue. There is some wear at the edges of the cuffs, and a thinned fray at the right elbow. Depsite this, it's very wearable, and perfect for costuming.
