Gorgeous Late 1910s Silk Two Piece Dress Suit with Soutache Wired, Standing Collar

  • Product Description

This exceptional Edwardian suit dates somewhere in the mid-late teens. While I feel it's likely very close to the turn of the decade, I admit that I am not wholly sure I have the ties styled correct, and it could be a touch earlier. It is made of a lustrous silk satin that is deceivingly lightweight. The skirt sits on the natural waist, and has a unique, partially interior wide waistband to avoid strain on the silk. It's lightly pleated for a soft drape, and there is an interior net lining that suspends a second, slimmer tier of satin. A wide swatch of soutache embellishes the hem of the outer tier. The jacket is very transitional, with a slightly dropped waist, ruching on the sides, and long ties that are of a piece with the back, seemingly meant to cross, then tie at the front. The crowing feature, of course, is the wired, adjustable, standing collar embellished with soutache that matches the cuffs and skirt hem. The buttons are decorative - it closes with hidden snaps.

This set is clean and ready to wear. The net lining at the back of the top is quite discolored and has some holes, but it's not really integral to the piece. The cased wire that supports the collar is a little crunched and warped from years of storage, but it can be easily adjusted to a number of wicked presentations. There are a few little scuffs/tiny abrasions to the surface of the satin on the skirt - nothing that detracts. The set is entirely sturdy and wearable.
