This vintage late 1940s sundress is such a unique offering! Made by Royal Hawaiian, a print we normally associate with bold tiki themed prints and tourist garments, I am fairly sure this piece was made to be worn by islanders. The crisp cotton is beautifully printed - a background of yellow chartruese, and then long leis in white, that "40s" green and lilac purple. It's an early version of this label, and I'd guess it's 1948 or 49. The sleeves are short with smart cuffs. The neckline is a modified sweetheart style, crowing the shirtwaist bodice. The buttons are bamboo. The skirt- oh, I did not do the best job of showing that off, as the hem is scalloped. This beauty closes with a side metal zipper.
Label: Royal Hawaiian, Made in Honolulu
Condition: Good plus
This dress is clean, crisp and ready to wear. The underarms have had replacement gussets of self-fabric added in the past, although I can't find where it was taken from. There's a little strain at the corner of each gusset. There is a very VERY faint ring at each underarm. The yellow was once more green, as can be seen when compared to the interior areas like the hem, but it's very even. There are two tiny marks on the upper left shoulder, and two finger tip sized spots on the lower left front skirt that I have treated, but which didn't lift. The price has been adjusted based on the minor condition flaws.
