Exquisite 1930s Hammered Charmeuse Satin Evening Gown in Black and Ivory Color Block by Jean-Louise, Toronto
This vintage late 1930s evening gown is bold and elegant in black and ivory color block. This is made of two unique and striking satin textiles, both heavy and textural. The ivory is shot with subtle gold lamé threads, and hammered into a heavy texture that catches the light. The black is crepe-backed, very heavy and has a subtle texture to the weave as well. The effect of the color blocked bodice is striking and slimming, with brilliant use of ruching. The puffed sleeves are shirred through the center, and trimmed with the same piping seen on the bodice. Elegant and sturdy, this is an outrageous beautiful piece of high quality that I am delighted to offer.
Label: Jean-Louise, Toronto
Material: Rayon Satin
Condition: Good plus, as is
This garment is has been dry cleaned and is ready to wear. There is a triangle of yellowing at each underarm, although it would only be visible with ones arm raised, and some mild yellowing at the interior upper back. At first, I thought the fibers of the ivory were somewhat shifted, maybe from a previous cleaning, but then I realized it was the lamé showing through -these threads have mostly oxidized, so there is not much shimmer left. I found and interfaced three holes in the skirt (two are near the hem.) There are some scattered little scuffs to the satin surface, but the lustre and texture conceal them. I find no other issues to note. This gown wears beautifully.
