An absolutely darling late 1930s dress. This dress is as-is, so please carefully read the condition notes. This charming dress is rich summer colors - fuchsia pink and minty green, mixed blues on navy. The details are spectacular. The collar and cuffs are appliqued with flowers cut from the printed rayon. The rayon is breezy and lightweight, best described as a heavy bemburg. Shirring runs from the top of the puff sleeves all along the yoke, and more above and below the unique midwaist. The midwaist has four points, two upward and two down, giving this dress fantastic dimension. The dress closes with buttons at the back of the neck and a short added side zipper on the left.
Bust: 42" - meant to be very bloused, probably best between 36" and 39"
Length: 39" + 4" at hem
Label: None Present
Condition: Fair plus, quite flawed, but repaired and wearable
This dress has been dry cleaned and is ready to wear. For some reason, the fabric in the yoke, front and back has shreds and threads pulled out of registry. At the front there are two, both with old repairs - one about 1 1/4 x 3/8 that is patched with self fabric, and a tiny hole that is darned. At the back, a 2" shred is patched and stitched over. I have interfaced five much small spots. The underarms are yellowed and had the starts or shredding, so those are interfaced also. I also interfaced several spots on the mid-waist, which has clearly been worn too snugly in the past. There are two old darns in that area as well. Most of the shirring is handstitched, and I don't know if that is original or old repairs. There is a wonky, very short but working side zipper that was added. There are other scattered small imperfections, but nothing requiring specific attention or affecting wear - expect an imperfect product with a lot of work done to make it wearable.
This is a consignment piece, and I admit I'm not sure I would have taken the time to make this wearable if not for that fact, but it is very special, charming, and it is wearable. It is priced at a fraction of what it would be in better condition.
