Bold Late 30s Red Tropical Print Rayon Crepe Day Dress with Pleated Peplum, As Is

  • Product Description

This fantastic dress is yet another from the very edge of the 1930s. This c. 1939 style still sports side buttons instead of a zipper, and large self-fabric buttons as an accent. The colors are tropical and boldy bright - marigold and emerald, start white and black lines on true, deep, vibrant red. The shoulders are padded with pleats for emphasis, and the sleeves are short. The neckline is high, and features a self-fabric "jabot" detail. The peplum is an early perm-pleated style with teeeeny knife pleats at the waist. The skirt is a sleek six-gore.

As noted in the condition notes below, this is wounded with repairs - if you are a small sizes, alterations could remove some of the flaws.

This dress presents beautifully, and is clean and ready to be worn. I consulted some experts before taking on this project myself - I had planned that it would be a very professionally done repair, but no one wanted to take it on, so I've done it, and priced it down accordingly. The dye on the back is splitting, mostly where black meets yellow. I interfaced the entire back of the bodice with a lightweight black mesh fusible. I closed some perfectly, but others wouldn't close without puckering the fabric, and three in particular are more open than I would have intended. (See last 4 photos) It's actually quite a tricky business to interface a whole segment of already-sewn clothing. There's tanning at the underarms, mostly on the right, and a previous wearer interfaced two off-seam tears at the right underarm. There are little white speckles on the edge of the lower right jabot bit, and on the chest nearby, that seem to have lifted the color from the fabric slightly. I wasn't able to fix this. There's also a two spots near the second button, although the print helps to hide them.

I make this sound awful, and it was, but it's totally wearable. Being sold for 1/3 what I would price it at for Very Good condition.

Currently missing the belt, but my consignor has told me she located it and it will be sent along after the dress.
