This authentic Victorian hat is a quintessential c. 1880s bonnet. 1880's hats remain some of the most wearable styles of Victorian fashion today, as they are moderate in size and beautifully sculpted. Made of a dusky grey silk over sturdy buckram, the fabric is elegantly pleated on both the crown and the upturned brim. A fringe of horsehair edges the crown. A single white ostrich feather spray is tucked between and the crown and the brim. The hat ties with grey grosgain ribbons. Bright coral millinery flowers are the final touch. If I had to guess, I would say these may have been added in the 1930s.
Marked Size: None Present
Interior Crown Diameter: 15", due to open U shape - this fits up to a size 22.5 well.
Label: None Present, but the sister hat in the shop is marked Bonhotal, New York, and these are clearly from the same maker
Material: Silk, Buckram, Horsehair, Ostrich Feather
Condition: Very Good
This hat is in brilliant condition given its age. As noted, I think the floral ornamentation may have been stitched on at a later date. There are a few broken fronds on the feather. I find no other issues to note.
