Authentic c. 1880s Victorian Bonnet in Black Velveteen with Ostrich Feather and Peach Flowers

  • Product Description

This authentic Victorian hat is a quintessential c. 1880s bonnet. 1880's hat remain some of the most wearable styles of Victorian fashion today, as they are moderate in size and beautifully sculpted. Made of a jet black cotton velveteen over sturdy buckram, the fabric is elegantly pleated on both the crown and the upturned brim. A single glossy black ostrich feather spray is tucked between and the crown and the brim at the lefthand side. The hat ties with black grosgain ribbons. Pale peach millinery flowers are the final touch. If I had to guess, I would say these may have been added in the 1930s. In the classic 1880s style, the maker's mark shows in a "keyhole" peaking out at the center of the lining.

      Marked Size: None Present
Interior Crown Diameter: 15", due to open U shape - this fits up to a size 22.5 well.

      Label: Bonhotal, New York
Material: Cotton Velveteen, Buckram, Ostrich Feather
      Condition: Very Good

This hat is in brilliant condition given its age. As noted,  I think the floral ornamentation may have been at a later date. There are a couple stitched, but it's mostly held on with well hidden, but aged, pins. There are a few broken fronds on the feather.  I find no other issues to note.
