Fantastic 1930s Cobalt Blue Cocktail Dress with Beaded Puff Sleeves and Killer Belt
Vintage 1930s cocktail dress in a sleek, brightly royal blue velvet. My photos do not do the color justice - it's truly saturated and royal in person, without any hint of darkness. I think this piece is most likely a 30s gown, shortened and converted during the war to something more versatile. The sleeves are slightly puffed, finished it an added band of elastic around the edge - it's a little roughly done, which makes me think that they were originally a different shape. The neckline is a high, modified sweetheart. The bust has four darts on each side, and is divided by the pointed midwaist. The waist is circled with a self-fabric belt, that has a truly fantastic buckle of silver tone metal and paste rhinestones. The skirt is bias cut at front. The dress closes with a side metal zipper, which I think was added. A beauty any way you slice it.
Label: Merville Frocks
Material: Silk and Rayon Velvet
Condition: Good, as is
This dress is clean and ready to wear. It has been both spot cleaned by me, and through proper dry cleaning. There remains a series of spots that I could not remove on the center front. I have included a photo - this shows the largest 1 1/4" stain (it's a little larger on the interior) and slightly disturbed nap. It also shows the color much more accurately. The cased elastic on the sleeves is somewhat relaxed, and the chiffon over it is starting to break. The rhinestones on the belt are largely missing, including the large center stone. The dress is sturdy, though, and it wears beautifully. It has been priced with flaws in mind.
