Vintage 1950s dress by Traina-Norell. One of the premier labels for fashion-forward American design. Norell was considered "the rival of Paris" because he truly was. While his creations were not made for individual clients as in the haute couture houses of Paris, they were each completed start to finish by a single worker, including hand finishing. This is a garment of a quality that simply cannot be had today.

This piece embodies the elegant simplicity that Norell's label has always been known for. Dating to c. 1955, it has a simple, flattering bodice and lushly knife pleated full skirt The silk textile is incredibly soft and lush, and it features a file velvet damask in a blooming tulip motif. The manner in which the sleeves are set in is unique - I've actually stuffed the sleeves so you can see that line more clearly. This beauty closes at the back with buttons and snaps.

This beauty is entirely wearable, but as it is a collectible label, it's been marked down significantly for various small flaws. Please read the condition notes prior to purchase.

*I suddenly think that I photographed this backwards, and the buttons should be at front

This dress is sturdy and looks very good when worn. I rescued it from a photography studio that had been using it from their boring portraits. It has been hand washed in the past, and I had it dry cleaned prior to social distancing. When I steam it, however, there's still a soapy scent from the cleaning given it by a previous owner. The hem is taken up about 2" from the original hem, and sadly cannot be let down without repair work - it must have been caught in a door or something, and was turned over to hide two of four area, each about 1", where the silk has abrasion style tears. The two on the outer side of have been top-stitched in the past to secure them, please see last two photos. The buttons are discolored, probably from being washed. There is some mild brown spotting at the lower right front hem, another spot on the far left hem, and one spot at the back underarm on the right side. There are three on the bodice. The dress has been priced with flaws in mind, but this is still a stunning designer dress and an excellent buy for the personal collector.
