Rare 1930s Evening Dress Set in Mint Green with Chevron Stripes Custom Designed by Myra Jervey
Product DescriptionI bought this fantastic late 1930s dress set for two reasons - I cannot resist a chevron stripe, and when I researched the label, the history was absolutely fantastic.
First about the dress ensemble. the dress is a crisp faille of pale pink green, which is given added weight from the heavy, flocked stripes that are cut to make the compelling chevron pattern. And it's an "X" at the back! The pattern matching was carefully undertaken. The neckline is simple, and the dress has simple self-fabric straps. It closes up the center back with a sturdy metal zipper. The matching jacket is a heavy rayon faille, cut cropped, and closes with self-fabric loops and cloth covered buttons. It has puffed 3/4 length sleeves, and is collarless - perfect for featuring bold jewelry.
About the designer - this is honestly one of the best small-time designer histories I have read. Stephens College was hoping to secure Adrian to teach young women about costume (clothing) design. The designer was unavailable, but recommended Myra Jervey as a candidate with "plenty of ability and initiative." A graduate from Agnes Scott in 1931, she had then worked under Patou "and other important designers" in Paris, and was hired by Stephens in 1937.
From an original 1937 article:
"Girls who want new clothes go to Myra and she designs a dress for them; they purchase the necessary materials, pay the seamstresses a fixed sum for the labor, and then walk out with an original model for the sum of $10 or $15, the variance depending on the cost of materials. Myra's day be- gins at eight in the morning and frequently runs on until ten at night. It is filled with classes, private conferences, and overseeing the dress shop. "
So, in summary, this dress was custom designed by Jervey for a specific student, and is one of a kind. Pretty bloody special.

This set is clean and ready to wear. There is a touch of brown spotting on the buttons that turns out to be surface fray of the faille. The dress has a yellowed spot on the back of the waist just by the zipper. There is some very mild underarm discoloration on the dress. There is a tiny, 3/16" clean cut low on the left side of the skirt.
