Gorgeous 1950s PHILIP HULITAR Oyster Silk Satin Cocktail Dress with Asymmetric Bodice and Roses

  • Product Description

This gorgeous designer dress by Philip Hulitar is really something special, a beautifully hand finished piece that is designed to curve naturally with the body. Long, arcing darts curve over the hip and down the sides of the buttock. The silk satin is has a soft lustre, being of the same weighty type I've seen in Hulitar's other pieces. Interlined with organza, it holds it's shape perfectly. The neckline and back are lined in soft pink that folds out to become a wide collar. A strapless internal bust creates support for the draping and the wide set sleeves. Cloth roses are firmly stitched digaonally across the left bust, two buds and two full blooms. The dress closes with a sturdy metal zipper.

      Bust: 41"*
      Waist: 32"
      Hips: 41"
      Length: 45"

*Laid flat, the bust appears to measure 39", bust he bust is quite structured. Measured along the interior, it has a 41" circumference.

      Label: Philip Hulitar
      Material: Silk
Condition: Good plus, very wearable as is

When I examine the dress closely, it's clear someone loved this dress  very much and had it altered in and back out at least once. Although they don't stand out, there are stitch lines that run along the the curving hip seam, under the arm, and at the center back darts - all taken in and then later let back out. The hem has been taken up and let out in the past - this left light creasing. I think the creasing would be completely removed with a professional press, but my dry cleaner wouldn't accept this with the roses at the bust and there's enough stitches there I didn't feel comfortable removing them. I think it's possible that the neckline and bust have been altered behind those roses, based on the backside view, but I'm not confident. I found one little scuff on the lower right front skirt. The Hulitar tag has been sewn down at the sides with stitches that aren't original, as only one of the original corner stitches is still intact, and someone obviously made a point to secure it.  It is definitely original to the dress, and clearly a Hulitar in style, but it feel disingenuous to restitch it in a way that looks original rather than acknowledging the previous owner secured it.

Aside from alteration, however, the dress is sturdy and fresh, with no stains, rips, strain or other such issues I can find to note.
