RARE 1950s SOPHIE GIMBLE Designer Silk New Look Gown from Saks Fifth Avenue in Navy and White
This beauty is one of the few 50s pieces in our Spring lookbook this year, and it's truly elegant. Made of a incredibly soft, decadent silk , it looks like a polka dot - but look closer, because those little acorns! The dress nipped to the waist, and has deep pleats that give the skirt fullness - there's plenty of room for a crinoline. The half-length sleeves are trimmed with fine navy mesh, as is the wide neckline. This beauty has an internal grosgrain waistband and closes with a sturdy metal zipper.Shoulders: 13"
Sophie Gimbel was the director and designer of Salon Moderne of Saks Fifth Avenue, a well respected designer whose pieces are featured in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Bust: 37" (back is narrow)
Label: Saks Fifth Avenue, Sophie Original
Condition: Very Good minus
This dress is crisp, fresh and ready to wear. There is a mild yellowing at the underarms. Although the silk itself is entirely sturdy, there are hand stitched repairs to multiple seams, and I have sent it out to have a few more closed up by machine. I suspect the cotton thread is weak, so you might expect to have other seam repairs in the future after wear. The price has been adjusted to about half what I would otherwise price it at.
