Vintage Edwardian Coat - Rare Ivory Cashmere Early Cocoon Coat with Lame Trim and Decadent, Heavy Guipure Lace Trim
Vintage 1910s cocoon coat is such a rarity. Held for years in a private collection, this exceptional piece is truly made of a finest materials and elegant work. The collector believes it to be cashmere, and I have to say I agree, although there's no way to test for a different between wool and cashmere. It has a luxuriously soft hand, and beautiful finish. The cut is a modified cocoon style - the gather is not as dramatic as Poiret's coats, but the influence is certainly there. It wraps closed to the left side, fastening with hooks and eyes of thread, as well as two large covered buttons with frog style button holes. There's three diagonal pleats at each side of the closure, to create the rounded tulip shape. The collar is edged with a wide lamé tape, over which heavy lace is appliqued. The guipure lace is set on mesh net, and is thick and dense. More lamé and a mix of lace with french knots accent the wide cuffs of the pleated deep sleeves. More lace crests the top of the sleeve. The final touch lace is at the back, with the gathers of the back panel gathered behind it, for the curving silhouette of the coat. The lining is decadence itself, a silk satin so buttery and delicious you could not find something of this quality outside of couture today. This is edged in an elegant coiling silk lace. This piece is incredibly fine - I admit, despite hearing how amazing it was, I didn't full appreciate it until I held it in my hands. You will be delighted.
This coat is quite versatile in fit. It sits as well on sizes from about a 4US to 14US. I fit this at about its maximum fit for comfort and shape.
Shoulders: 14.5" measured on the interior. However, the sleeves are so straight cut and wide that I was able to fit comfortably with 16.5" shoulders
Width at Hem: 40"
Label: None Present
Material: Cashmere (Likely) or very fine wool, silk, lamé
Condition: Very Good minus
This coat is sturdy, very clean and ready to be worn. I have been very exacting regarding condition. There are a few moth chews and some VERY subtle surface mothing throughout. Specifically, there two small holes and one surface divit on the back of the right sleeves, and a very old, very tidy repair at what would be the back underarm. There is a subtle divit on the left side of the mid back, and a cluster of five at the back right hem, to the side of the lace and pleats. There is a faint divit on the right front hem. There is tiny grey spot under the right arm, and a teeny pin-tip dot of brown on the right front. On the lining, there is a small thin/frayed area below the back of the neck, but it is not large and there is no shattering. There is a stain to the lining at the inside edge of the left sleeve. Finally, the silk is fraying on the loops for the button closure. I find no other issues to note. It is exceptional and presents perfectly.
